Of all places in the world to find love, we think that New Zealand is pretty up there! And it just so happens that it was while working as co-workers in Wellington, New Zealand, that Ben + Andy’s love story first began. Over the course of 18 months they went from co-workers, to friends, to completely 100% falling for each other. It was love!
This love soon led to the need for a proposal, which took place at Easter. Having both received chocolate Easter bunny’s from their nephews, the stage was set - Andy masterfully made a small hole in Ben’s bunny and hid a proposal note inside. A few days later, at home in the kitchen when Ben started eating the chocolate bunny he found the note... and a few seconds later, the proposal was complete!
Planning began for a wedding date of April 4th, 2015. Ben + Andy enlisted their friend and registered celebrant Herman Visagie to marry them, and selected the venue of Riverview - a 1920’s bungalow overlooking the Waikato River in Hamilton, New Zealand. Invites were sent to 80 of their nearest and dearest, inviting them all and listing the dress code as: 1920’s.
On the day, Andy + Ben gifted each other with life. Andy gave Ben a banana palm, while Ben gave Andy a boysenberry plant. Andy dressed in a steel blue Barker’s suit with shoes by Windsor Smith, while Ben donned a Smoky blue Cambridge suit and was shod in Cafeina. Both Ben + Andy wore the fragrance of Calvin Klein “One” for their walk down the aisle, and their love was sealed by his mother’s recrafted engagement ring for Andy, and a matching creation for Ben - both wonderfully crafted by The Goldsmiths Gallery Limited. The ceremony took place on the terraced amphitheater outside the venue and ended with a waiata, followed by canapés and champagne on the lawn.
Inside the Riverview house, Andy + Ben treated their guests to a self-styled cocktail party. The roaring twenties were in full swing for their reception, with live jazz, swing and contemporary tunes from Tracy Hopewell and The Fever. In preparation for their first dance – a Charleston lindy hop self-choreographed, to ‘I Got Rhythm’ written by George Gershwin – the boys took dance lessons from Rachel Skews at Wai-Kat Swing, ensuring their first dance was nothing short of amazing!
Throughout the night, guests dined on a mix of canapés and “mini-meals”, to allow for constant mingling and dancing, and drank from a selection of vintage cocktails as well as beer and New Zealand wines. The speeches featured an “open-mic” segment where friends and guests performed on guitar and ukulele, and to top it all off the cake was a two layer, art deco styled cake with a rainbow cake with white chocolate top layer and a dark chocolate bottom layer iced in black, white and gold featuring peacock feathers and a silhouette relief – WOW!
The images you see here are from a pre-wedding photoshoot in the award winning Hamilton Gardens, as well as from the actual day of Andy + Ben’s wedding, and all of them were shot by Lenise Ormsby Photography. We simply love the 1920’s vibe of this wedding and these images, and we just know you will too!
